Aesculapian Medical Society (AMS) Scholarships

The annual AMS Scholarships were established in May 2011 to recognize IUSM SNMA members who have distinguished themselves academically and have demonstrated community service during the basic sciences years, clincal years and overall involvement within the community.  A third scholarship recognizes an SNMA student who has consistently distinguished themselves academically and has shown significant service and involvement within the community.  Lastly, a special presentation is made to recognize a graduating former SNMA President as a thank you for their service to the community at large.

AMS Basic Sciences Scholarship

This scholarship ($1,000) is presented to an underrepresented medical student who has demonstrated commitment to community, academic excellence and financial need within the first two years of medical school or basic science years (year 1 and 2).

Adrienne Nicole Cobb, MSII

George Rawls Scholar

Lawrence North High School

DePauw University

Adrienne has been involved with SNMA in both of her first years of medical school, most recently elected as the Secretary.  She volunteers frequently.  She has been involved in the Student Research Program in Academic Medicine each of the past two summers conducting research with a research mentor.  She is driven.  She understands her research and she was able to give a wonderful presentation on her findings last fall on research day.  She was involved in the Honduras medical Spanish program where she spent 4 weeks during the summer of 2010 learning medical Spanish in the morning and observing in the afternoons at the local hospital in Trujillo, Honduras.  In undergrad, she traveled to El Salvador where she served as the Spanish translator in the day clinics set up to serve those who could not afford to pay or did not have access to healthcare.

She has been a solid performer academically.   Her professors indicate that she is a bright student in the upper half of her class.  She is often prepared, is a clear thinker and shows a good grasp of knowledge.  She also shows great initiative.

She was recently nominated for the Herbert Nicken’s Award.  This award is granted by the AAMC in recognition of outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care and have demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of minorities in the United States.

On a personal note, Adrienne is a friendly, caring, outgoing person.  She works hard but also knows that it is important to stay focused and be an example not only to her peers but others.  She is one of those people that everyone wants to get to know.  It is a pleasure knowing her and watching her grow throughout her journey.

AMS Clinical Years Scholarship

This scholarship ($1,000) is presented to an underrepresented medical student who has demonstrated continued commitment to community, academic excellence through the clinical years and demonstrates financial need.

Besem Beteck, MD

General Surgery, St. Agnes hospital, Baltimore, Maryland

Wimcomico High School, Cameroon, Africa

Graduate of the Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) Program

University of Maryland – College Park

Besem will be best remembered as a fourth year blogger on the Indiana University School of Medicine website with his insights and commentary as he trekked through the fourth year.  This is not the reason for Besem’s selection of this scholarship.

Besem has distinguished himself academically over the past four years of medical school.  He has been the recipient of the Lula and George Rawls Award of Excellence during the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic years.  He completed the first two years with nearly all Honors, only three of those basic sciences courses were High Passes.  He continued to excel in third and fourth year.

Besem has been involved in SNMA and in various volunteer activities throughout the community.  He was involved in the Student Research Program in Academic Medicine in the summer between his first and second year of medical school.

On a personal note, Besem is a reserved, quiet person.  He is caring and helpful.  He is one of those people who sets the curve but you would never know it because he remains humble.  He will make a fantastic surgeon.  We are proud to have met you.  Keep up with the fantastic work.

AMS Leadership and Professionalism Award

This scholarship is presented to a graduating underrepresented medical student who has demonstrated continued Academic Excellence and has displayed Leadership qualities and has displayed high levels of Professionalism in the community and beyond.

Helen Louise Flippin, MD

Family Medicine, St. Vincent Hospital Center, Indianapolis, IN

Cathedral High School

Xavier University of Louisiana

Helen has a quiet strength and she someone who is always interested and eager to serve.  She has served as an officer in the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and most recently served as the SNMA National Convention Planning Committee Co-Chair with third year medical student Emmary Butler.  If you attended the SNMA national Convention, April 20-24th, you saw first-hand what medical students like Helen and Emmary can accomplish.  Helen also served as the co-chair of the 2010 IUSM Westside Health Fair, one of the largest health fairs for the Indianapolis community.  Helen has been involved in many other volunteer activities as a medical student.  Among them is Community Day, an annual neighborhood health and information fair that was the result of a collaborative effort between Forest Manor Health center, North Arlington Health Center, IPS School 83 and Devington Communities Association.  As a proficient dancer, she taught Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School students step dancing and performed on the Evening of the Arts, a charity event organized by medical students.  She also served as a mentor for the students.   Helen organized several activities for the MS IV students, such as “Interview Tips” and “Getting Through the Match”.

Helen has distinguished herself academically as well.  She scored extremely well on both Step I and Step II that positioned herself extremely well to get her first choice of residency.   She was often cited by her faculty evaluators as a serious student, compassionate and cares deeply for her patients.   Helen’s medical interests include global medicine and public health.  In the future, she plans to open a family practice dedicated to maternal and pediatric health for the underserved.

On a personal note, Helen is compassionate about students and patients.  She cares about those around her and makes sure that everyone has information, if she has the information.  She cares about the “underdog” and this quality will carry her in her career of family medicine.  Her patients will care for her because of her genuine passion about their medical care.  She will make an excellent family physician.

Special AMS Presentation

Aundrea Cheri Tunstall, MD

OB/GYN, George Washington University, Washington, DC

Broad Ripple High School

Graduate of the Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) Program

Indiana University – Bloomington

Aundrea served as SNMA President during the 2009-2010 academic year and previously was Vice president during the 2008-2009 academic year.  This scholarship is in recognition of her service to SNMA and AMS during her time as President of SNMA.

She was on the local planning committee for the SNMA National Conference and has been instrumental in organizing SNMA events over the four years of medical school.

On a personal note, Aundrea is an outgoing, diligent student.  She was able to recruit Dr. Allen and Dr. Treadwell as the Faculty Co-Chairs of SNMA.  She seeks out those around to help with not only her goals but other students goals as well.  She is successful and she will make an awesome OB GYN physician.
